Budapest
Budapest is a city of contrasting halves, set proudly on the banks of the rippling Danube. Buda, on the west bank, is the quaint old mediaeval town standing on Castle Hill. From the Fishermen's Bastion at the top of the hill you have a wonderful view across the river to the more modern Pest. Buda's mediaeval Castle Hill is a warren of cobbled streets with postcard-perfect views round every corner.

On the more 'modern' Pest side, here you'll find wide avenues, shopping streets and magnificent buildings like the Hungarian Parliament. Enjoy the grand architecture of the Parliament building, St. Stephen's Basilica and the Opera, or soak up the poignant atmosphere around Heroes' Square. The main shopping area is the pedestrianised Vaci utca on the Pest side; look for the shopping courtyards that are not initially visible from the street front. Good value buys are porcelain, crystal and embroidery. Combine the beauty of Buda with the charm of Pest and you have an unforgettable short break destination. |

A boat trip on the Danube is a must to see the city either by day or night. Take the funicular railway for a smooth ride up Castle Hill to enjoy great views across the city. A coffee in the chic 19th Century Café Gerbeaud is a must. Enjoy the peaceful oasis of Margaret Island or relax in the City Park. Budapest is the unofficial spa capital of Europe, try the Szechenyi baths or any of the thermal spas for which the city is deservedly famous. |
